Screen arts Workshops

Every Sunday

at 3:00pm ET/12:00pm PT

on Zoom

Once a week, we gather together—the Play By Play team and YOU—to talk about the art and craft of on-screen storytelling.

Each session begins with studying a scene, focusing on writing, acting and directing.

What makes this scene work? What role did the writer play? The director? The actor? How did they work together? Most importantly: what lessons can we draw from the scene to improve our own creative work and creative process?

At Play By Play, we’re all in this together. Writers, directors, actors, producers, fans… it’s all about community and conversation. Join us to explore the purposes, processes, and possibilities of art.

Let’s make something together.

specifics

From the fundamentals of storytelling to the fine points of craft, we’re in this together.

For writers, we’ll cover structure, setting, character, action, dialogue. We’ll talk about the purpose(s) of dramatic writing, the editing process, the importance of workshopping, the strengths and constraints of the stage, and more.

For actors, we’ll cover the who, what, where, when, and why of any given character, in depth. We will discuss the arc within a scene, the definition of a beat, acting with objectivity, the easiest ways to find who your character really is, and more.

For directors, we’ll cover the elements of story, how to talk with actors, the importance of cinematography, navigating a set, and even how to begin post-production.

For everyone, we’ll cover what makes a story great—and how to make new stories of our own.
